Strong Start for VP Glasgow at the Scottish National League Opener

Victoria Park City of Glasgow AC delivered an impressive all-round performance at the opening match of the Scottish National Athletics League in Grangemouth, with a series of standout victories and strong scoring across all disciplines.

Leading the way were four maximum point performances, underlining the club’s strength across a range of events. In the endurance events, Anna Clark produced a dominant run to win the women’s steeplechase in 8:51.72, securing a full 20-point haul. In the throws, the club’s depth was evident as Kiera Maxwell took victory in the discus with 43.96m, while Lucy Kernahan claimed top spot in the discus with an excellent 33.94m.

In the field, Ruaridh Brewer added another maximum score with a superb win in the pole vault, clearing 3.60m to secure first place and underline VP Glasgow’s growing strength in the event.

Sprints Show Depth and Consistency

The sprint group delivered a series of valuable contributions across the programme. Fraser Blake impressed in the 100m, finishing second in 11.59 to secure 16 points, while Inioluwa Owolabi added a strong double, scoring in both the 100m and 200m. David Wilson also contributed valuable points in the senior 100m.

Over 400m, both Owolabi and Corey Donaldson ensured solid scoring finishes, maintaining the club’s competitive presence across the sprint events.

Endurance Athletes Deliver Key Points

In addition to Clark’s standout victory, the middle-distance group added important points throughout the match. Rhuairdh Laing ran well to finish fifth in a competitive mile, while Allan Cameron and Jamie Turner both contributed in the 800m, ensuring VP Glasgow remained competitive in the endurance disciplines.

Strength in the Field Events

The field events once again proved a major source of points for the club. Alongside Maxwell and Kernahan’s victories, Haley Elliot secured second place in the discus, while Liam McIntyre delivered strongly in the shot put.  Haley picked up 18 points for 2nd in the discus, 16 points for 3rd in the javelin and 14 points for the shot.

Across the board, VP Glasgow athletes combined high-quality performances with strong consistency, ensuring valuable points in nearly every event. The team’s balance between track and field, coupled with depth in key areas such as throws and pole vault, positions the club strongly for the remainder of the league season.

With several athletes already hitting top form and others building momentum, the opening match provides a solid platform as the league campaign continues.
